Eirgrid’s Christmas present to rural Ireland an outrageous affront to democracy.

State company brazenly decides on collision course approach with communities in the North-East:

EirGrid, on the cusp of Christmas, has despatched maps with pylon positions, access routes and stringing line areas to landowners across Meath, Cavan and Monaghan and given notice of its intentions to re-submit a planning application to An Bord Pleanála in early 2014 to erect over 400 giant pylons across Meath, Cavan, Monaghan, Armagh and Tyrone. The planning application for the North-South interconnector is a mirror image of the failed submission made in December 2009.

Government’s lack of support for independent international assessment of EirGrid’s proposals a disgrace

NEPPC has for years challenged many of the Eirgrid claims around the feasibility, cost and health and safety aspects of underground cables versus overhead lines. There now exists with the public very little confidence or credibility in any of the statements and claims made by EirGrid. The situation is crying out for our elected representatives to take responsibility for the current mess and to ensure that a thorough and detailed independent analysis of the underground versus overhead line options is performed. Eirgrid misleading public and misinforming Minister Rabbitte on true costs of Underground cable technology. Undergrounding option is 2-3 times cheaper than overhead lines options

The Transmission System Operator (TSO) approach to the grid development has been both biased and blinkered. EirGrid has clearly stated and has shown by its actions that it has an absolute preference for overhead lines in rural areas. EirGrid has steadfastly refused to take account of the advantages and benefits of undergrounding, for our environment, for our landscape and for the communities of the North-East. Instead, it has approached the projects solely on a one-dimensional engineering basis.

Wake-up meeting a wake-up call to Government parties

There was an attendance of over 1,000 concerned citizens at Knightsbrook hotel for the monster wake-up meeting. NEPPC presented a strong case for the undergrounding of the North-South interconnector, highlighting that it is a feasible, affordable and acceptable option.
