Why is NEPPC holding a Fundraising Prize Draw?

November 22, 2017

The North East Pylon Pressure Campaign (NEPPC) group has been on the road for 10 years and has prevented EirGrid from erecting over 400 giant pylons and overhead lines across Meath, Cavan, Monaghan, Armagh and Tyrone. NEPPC believes that the health risks associated with living close to these extra high voltage lines is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated.

NEPPC enjoys the support of a range of reputable organisations, including Fáilte Ireland, GAA, ICMSA, IFA and the County Councils in Meath, Cavan and Monaghan.

EirGrid has received planning approval to erect these lines, but does not have approval to enter landowners’ properties.

NEPPC is currently working on 2 major challenges:

  1. NEPPC is challenging EirGrid through the Courts in a bid to establish that the planning approval is invalid. We also have a case being taken to the European Court of Justice related to public consultation and public costs.
  1. NEPPC is preparing a war-chest to challenge EirGrid on a farmer by farmer basis if the company ever tries to force access onto landowners’ properties without their expressed permission. Over 95% of landowners’ refuse to accept these pylons onto their lands.

These two challenges involve considerable costs. The NEPPC committee and its many supporting community members continue to give their time very generously on a voluntary basis, with all funds raised used solely for hiring professional expertise and Court related costs.

NEPPC is asking all affected communities, including those across the country likely to be affected in the future, to support our €50,000 fundraising prize draw, which we sincerely believe will result in the North-South interconnector being undergrounded along public roads. Many thanks for your continued support.
